Telecom Rebirth

What are you going to tell them?

This is about the way telecommunications has forever changed society, and how that entire paradigm is being redefined in such a dramatic way as to undergoe a rebirth. The following developments are causing this rebirth to come about:

  • The internet
  • VOIP
  • Wireless
  • Security

Once the phoenix emerges from its ashes, the new telecom will a different beast altogether.

Tell them what you are telling them.

Telecommunications was the first avenue to overcome the hurdle of distance. Because people were able to communicate with each other over great distances instantly, the cost of creating, developing, and marketing new ideas was drastically reduced. One of these new ideas just so happened to be the Darpanet, eventually became known as the internet, both of which at the time needed a wired network to flow through. Where would it find that network? The telecoms.

Embracing this new marketplace, the telecom industry has effectively cannibalized itself. Not to blame them, no one could have foreseen the changes taking place thanks to voice over internet protocol.

In response to the drastic reduction in costs for standard voice communications, telecoms are finally following through on their promised investments into a fiber optics in hopes of capturing some of the pay tele-vision marketplace. Obviously the cable operators aren't too please with this and are lobbying hard against their intents. Both have additional worries: television over internet protocol, consumer supplied content, municipal networks, and adhoc wireless networks.

And how the reborn telecom industry will swallow up and merge the entertainment industries: music, film, and video games, as well as a large portion of the intangible retail industry.

Telecommunications is paving the way as the world becomes a true global village. Like energy, telecommunications is becoming ubiquitous and incredibly important to the new economy, the new society and the new future.

As our civilization gains an increasingly real self awareness, we won't always like what we see in the mirror of the media. However, because what used to be a one way broadcast is now an interactive two way street, we can better define who we are.

Thanks to recent advances in technology, the price of communications has plummeted.

The telecom industry is going to acquire the entertainment industry, starting with cable, and moving on to music and movie distribution. It will also bring about the merger of the video game, movie and online social group industries.

Many people will oppose the results of this rebirth:

  • the cable companies
  • consumer groups

Municipalities will also create networks, but people will oppose them:

  • the cable companies
  • the telecom industries

Electric companies may also enter the network game, due to the need to upgrade their electric meter reading systems with fiber optics.

Consumers may also be able to enter the network game via the wireless network game. The unlicensed wireless bands will allow an adhoc wireless networks to be shared throughout neighborhoods.

The entertainment industry is lagging, still using lawsuits to enforce copyrights. This is not a sustainable enforcement strategy.
