DIR-450 + u727?

I can't seem to find any reliable source, so far, to confirm if the DIR-450 and the Verizon Wireless u727 (Novatel) modem work. When and if I do, I'll post it here. These are the modems listed as supported at D-Link.com:

  • Kyocera KPC 650 (Sprint & Verizon - Cardbus)
  • Kyocera KPC 680 (Verizon - ExpressCard) [requires Cardbus adapter]
  • Novatel V620 (Sprint & Verizon - Cardbus)
  • Novatel Merlin S720 (Sprint - Cardbus)
  • Novatel Ovation U720 (Sprint - USB)
  • Sprint PCS Connection Card PC-5740 (Sprint - Cardbus)
  • Sierra AC 580 (Sprint & Verizon - Cardbus)
  • Sierra AC 595 (Sprint - Cardbus)
  • Sierra AC 5220 (Sprint - Cardbus)
  • Verizon PC-5740 (Verizon - Cardbus)
  • Verizon PC-5750 (Verizon - Cardbus)
  • Pantech PX-500 (Sprint - Cardbus)

if you need a 3G router for the USB727, any of these from cradlepoint will work great:

the CTR500 and MBR1000 even feature LED lights to indicate the signal level being received by the U727

Hi EVDOInfo, I tried ordering from 3GStore, but I kept on getting an error when I tried to add the router to my cart. Since I needed a setup ASAP, I just went to the Verizon Wireless store and bought a PC5750 PC Card. It works good in my area, so I'm quite pleased. It even works with debian linux! (Though I did have to boot Vista to activate the card - boo!)

To get wi-fi setup, I bought a Kyocera KR2 from kyocera-wireless.com. I was able to get 15% off by registering as a new user, so I used the savings to get next day Fedex shipping.

Sounds like you found a solution, but since your site currently is the first Google hit for "dir-450 u727", I thought I'd mention that I have a DIR-450 and a U727 (Sprint), with DIR-450 firmware version 1.03 - the latest as of Dec. 8, 2008 - and hardware version A1.

The U727 does not work with the DIR-450. You can plug it in, and its green light remains solid. If you go to the Status tab, you will see WAN status and you can click "Connect" and a new screen will pop up saying "Connecting... Please wait."

After about 30-60 seconds, the D-Link responds with a simple "Connection failed". I turned on logging and it does not provide any more detail.

There are suggestions (google DIR-450 OpenWRT) that someone has figured out how to replace the firmware and thus make this problem fixable, but many people have chosen other routers, much like you have (my purchase was made while in a Fry's store.)

The DIR-450 does work with the U720. I also have a Cradlepoint PHS-300, which works with both the U727 and U720.

It's been nearly a year since D-Link posted version 1.03 and I hope they will provide an update with more modems supported, and that if they do, someone else will post again saying that this information no longer applies.

Just as a follow-up...I had written tech support at Dlink and asked if they had any idea as to when a firmware update would happen for the DIR-450. I too moved up from a U720 to U727. What I got back was a very curt email saying not to "bother them anymore" with questions like this. I should keep checking back to the website and look and see if a firmware update had been put up.

Needless to say this will probably be the last Dlink item I will ever buy. Great customer service huh!
