FIOS Review

After a few weeks with FIOS, the process has gone relatively smoothly. I feel hampered by the price of static ips on the network ($20 / month / block of five - ouch!), but for now I guess its not a big deal.

I just requested a reverse DNS record for my static ip, and I also found this page about the process which I found helpful:

I was thinking of requesting some IP space from ARIN to route over FIOS using BGP, but it seems doubtful that Verizon would comply. Instead I've put in an inquiry to my colocation space provider to ask about more IPs. Hopefully in the future TLS will allow more than one securely hosted website per IP, but I'm not holding my breath. IPv6 will likely be commonly available first!

Also I should note that I don't use the Verizon supplied router and wish I had explained to them I didn't need it. I instead use pfSense on a PC Engines ALIX embedded PC. It works great!

I also found this page about ARIN allocations very helpful:

Yay! I just got a call from Verizon that my PTR was setup. :-) I'm very impressed with their FIOS team. I hope it stays that way.
